Warnapura ton drives Sri Lanka - India vs Sl 1st test

Sri Lanka, piloted by Malinda Warnapura’s century, took command in an extended session blessed with clear weather to strengthen their position to 205 for 2 at lunch. Warnapura was supported by his captain Mahela Jayawardene, who compiled a classy half-century to grind the opposition on a slow pitch and the Indians compounded their woes with a couple of missed opportunities.

Sri Lanka added 120 runs without losing a wicket and the batsmen never looked in trouble. A front-foot no-ball by Zaheer Khan in the sixth over of the day denied India a breakthrough as Warnapura spooned a sharp return catch. Jayawardene was as fortuitous later on, when Dinesh Karthik failed to hold on to a thin bottom edge off an Anil Kumble slider.

Sri Lanka hope to keep home win record in India Test

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene says Sri Lanka are keen to maintain their impressive home record when they take on India in a three-Test series, which starts here on Wednesday.

The hosts have won home series against South Africa, England and the West Indies in the past four years and in the same period have lost just one match in 16 at home — against Pakistan two years ago.

Jayawardene said pride was the key to success.

“We don’t want any team to come and beat us at home. That’s the attitude we go with. There is a lot of pride involved in it and we would like to protect that (record),” he said on the eve of the opening Test.

“We are very consistent at home and we will continue to do that because as I have said there is a lot of pride involved in it.”

Jayawardene denied there was more pressure on his side to win the series against India, who have quality batsmen in Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Venkatsai Laxman, Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag.

Controversy kicks up before India-Lanka series

They talk about “confusion” as if it is a form of dyslexia and that becomes the dysfunctional norm in this part of the world.

Rumours on how former Sri Lanka Test captain Hashan Tillekeratne had been appointed then ‘fired’ as manager left most foreign and Indian journalists bemused although he said he was still the manager.

Then there is the suggestion that Chris Broad’s appointment as match referee for the limited overs series following the Idea Cup Test Series was ‘controversial’ and likely to result in an official objection from Sri Lanka Cricket. This has been shot down by the International Cricket Council.

It seems that those “objecting” to Broad have short memories. While it is known the players don’t have a problem with the former English opening batsman, it seams there is a smear campaign before the limited overs series starts in Dambulla next month.
