India vs South Africa 1st Test - Chennai Day 3 - Update 2

The spectators who were at the MA Chidambaram Stadium have witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime innings. Sehwag’s awesome triple-century, 309 off 292 balls, has changed the course of this match dramatically. India have scored 386 runs today off 85 overs and are only 72 runs behind South Africa. It’s fair to say that only one team can win this match from here and that is India. The pace at which Sehwag has scored his runs has kept this Test alive. If India can bat on tomorrow and gain a lead of around 200 shortly after tea (and it is possible if Sehwag bats on) the pressure will fully be on South Africa on a fifth day pitch. And there’s the world record of Lara’s 400 as well.

India vs South Africa 1st Test - Chennai Day 3 - Super Sehwag sprints past 200

A stirring double-century, at better than a run a ball, from Virender Sehwag was the centerpiece of an emphatic Indian response to South Africa’s mammoth total. By tea on the third day, Sehwag had made more than two-third of India’s runs, with 287 being added to the overnight total of 82 at well over four an over. The first-wicket partnership ended at 213, with Wasim Jaffer contributing a dogged 73, but that was merely the signal for Sehwag to unleash a fusillade of strokes before the intervals. South Africa’s five bowlers toiled away with no reward on an unforgiving pitch and by tea, a couple of them were looking a little shell-shocked.

The extent to which Sehwag altered South Africa’s gameplan was quite obvious after lunch, with even Dale Steyn bowling without a slip in place. He did get some late swing, but nothing that could be construed as threatening and the bulk of the work went to Paul Harris, who finally switched to a round-the-wicket line to snare Jaffer. Jaffer’s had been the perfect anchor role, and when he flirted at one outside off stump that actually turned a little, Jacques Kallis took a fine catch low at slip.

Big picture

Quotas and colour, senior and junior - they are the controversies that have been part of South Africa’s and India’s build-up to the first Test in Chennai. South Africa’s controversial quota-based selection policy exploded during their win in Bangladesh with Andre Nel reacting strongly to his exclusion from the tour of India, while Charl Langeveldt later opted out because he did not want the tag of a quota player. India’s historic CB Series victory in Australia reignited the senior-junior debate that has been a rage ever since Mahendra Singh Dhoni led a young squad to Twenty20 glory in South Africa.

West Indies Tail Saves The Follow On In Guyana

Sri Lanka 476-8 declared (M Jayawardene 136, Warnapura 120) & 83-1 v
West Indies 280 (Sarwan 80, Vaas 3-48, Thushara 3-59)

The West Indies bowlers did their bit with the bat as their side avoided having to follow on on day four of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Georgetown, Guyana as they were bowled out for 280 in reply to 476 for seven declared.

Sri Lankan openers Michael Vandort and Malinda Warnapura made a confident start before Vandort was caught down the leg side by Denesh Ramdin off of the bowling of Chris Gayle for 24, with Sri Lanka on 43 for one in their second innings.

They reached lunch on 83 for one, 274 runs ahead and looking in complete control and under little threat from the West Indian bowlers.

Adams stars in Tigers’ thrilling win - Kolkata Tigers v Mumbai Champs, 4th match

Kolkata Tigers 146 for 5 (Gavaskar 41*, Jhunjhunwala 33) beat Mumbai Champs 144 (Patil 52, Astle 30, Adams 3-35) by two runs

At 127 for 3 off 16.3 overs, needing 20 more off 21 deliveries to triumph in a Twenty20, most would have gone with the Mumbai Champs to cruise to a convincing win. But two quick wickets from Andre Adams sparked the Tigers back into the hunt; another five fell in the space of three overs, and even if No. 11 Avinash Yadav’s attempt for the third run off the final ball had been successful, the Champs would have fallen short by the one run instead of the two.

Mark Gillespie Picked For Second Test In Wellington

New Zealand have made one change to their team that beat England by 189 runs in the first Test in Hamilton with fast bowler Mark Gillespie replacing spinner Jeetan Patel for the second match in Wellington.

Gillespie was a late call-up to the squad for the opening Test after Iain O’Brien suffered a toe injury but didn’t make the side as New Zealand went for a double spin attack with Daniel Vettori and Patel in the side.

South Africa 179 for 3 beat Bangladesh 173 by seven wickets

South Africa came one step closer to usurping Australia as the No. 1 one-day side in the world with a comfortable seven-wicket victory in Mirpur. Andre Nel scythed through Bangladesh’s top order after they chose to bat and though the tourists suffered a wobble of their own, AB de Villiers and JP Duminy sealed the series with a battling 119-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Bar a record fifth-wicket stand of 119 between Shakib Al Hasan and Raqibul Hasan, which proved the bulk of a poor 173 in 48.2 overs, there was little the hosts could take out of their 13th defeat on the trot.
