India were right back in the match as Harbhajan Singh dismissed Samravera trapping him right in front. He also dismissed Dilshan in the same over as he edged the ball and was taken spectacularly at short leg. India with Harbhajan Singh were looking threatening as the Sri Lankan middle order was on a verge of a collapse.

Harbhajan Singh finally got into groove as he removed in-form Warnapura who got an outside edge and was caught by Gambhir. India finally broke a threatening partnership, which was shaping for a long partnership. He also removed Sangakkara to bring India right back in the match. With two quick wickets, and two new batsmen, India can put pressure on the Lankans.

At Lunch India was 151 for 0 (Sehwag 91*, Gambhir 50*)

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir put behind them not only the debacle at the SSC, but also thoughts of how they played and missed early here, and how the ball misbehaved when it hit the cracks populating one end of the pitch.

As a result India got off to a flying start, taking the first steps towards exorcising the ghosts of the first Test. Sehwag came close - for the second time in his career - to getting a hundred in the first session of a Test.

India started their tour of Sri Lanka on an impressive note with their bowlers putting up a tidy display to bundle out Sri Lanka Board XI for a modest 224 on a rain-truncated opening day of the three-day warm-up match in Colombo on Friday.

Electing to bat, the home team never really recovered from a shaky start and could have been skittled out for a much lower first innings total had it not been for a resolute 100-run fifth wicket partnership between Thilina Kandamby (84) and Chamara Silva (68).

Captain Anil Kumble (3/30) was the pick of the Indian bowlers while paceman Zaheer Khan (2/35) and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (2/52) chipped in with two wickets each at the Nondescripts Cricket Club.

Every ex-cricketer seems to have their own formula to play new spin sensation Ajantha Mendis even before he has made his Test debut, so does former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Ranjit Fernando, who feels patience will play rich dividends while playing him.

“The best way to play Mendis and read his six different varieties of balls is to spend as much time as possible in the middle. If you are patient and occupy the crease for a long time, you can read him better and make adjustments to play his lethal ‘carrom ball’,” Fernando, who will be on the commentators panel during the series, has told The Times of India on Saturday.

The Indian team for the first Test of the Idea Cup series are still several rungs below in terms of form and match-fitness, which means that Gary Kirsten and Co. still have a lot of work to do. While the former South African opening batsman may have been happy four days ago at the preparation for the Sri Lanka Test series, he will be wondering whether a second practice match might have been an advisable option.

India’s coach Gary Kirsten has said that with so much cricket taking place in different formats, it is vital that every player understands the role that he is expected to play in the upcoming Tests against Sri Lanka.

Speaking to the media at the end of the drawn three-day game against a Sri Lanka Board XI, Kirsten said: “We have to create an environment for everyone. To perform at his optimum, he needs a complete understanding of what he needs to do. We have worked hard on it so that everyone understands their roles and how they are going to play Test cricket.”

Test hopeful Thilina Kandamby top-scored with 84 to help the Sri Lanka Board XI make 224 against a visiting India on the opening day of their three-day tour match on Friday.

The Sri Lankans were tottering at 82-4 before Kandamby and Chamara Silva rescued them with a 100-run fifth-wicket partnership.

India captain Anil Kumble took 3-30 while his off-spin partner Harbhajan Singh took 2-52 to fold up the hosts’ Lankan innings in 71.5 overs at the Nondescripts Cricket Club.

After being busy in one-dayers and Twenty20s for almost three months, India will look to quickly get into the groove for the longer version of cricket as they take on Sri Lankan Board XI in a three-day warm-up match in Colombo from Friday. India, who last played a Test against South Africa at home in April, took advantage of a sunny day here and got into some rigorous practice to shift into the five-day mode ahead of the first match, beginning on June 23.

The match will be India’s only warm-up game before the three-Test series against the host beginning July 23.

India is likely to field their senior players for the match as many of them have not played for a while as they were not part of the recent Asia cup in Pakistan.
