India’s Rahul Dravid became only the sixth batsman in history to score 10,000 Test runs as the first Test against South Africa headed for a draw.

The 35-year-old former captain reached the milestone on his way to making 111 for his 25th Test century in Chennai.

Virender Sehwag earlier departed for 319, adding only 10 to his overnight score, as India were all out for 627.

Dale Steyn took 4-103 before Neil McKenzie and Hashim Amla took South Africa to 131-1, a lead of 44.

The Proteas pair batted cautiously, with India’s spinners Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble finding increasing turn on the worn pitch.

One such delivery saw Harbhajan end an aggressive knock from South Africa skipper Graeme Smith.

The opener was adjudged lbw to one that turned in at him off a length after hitting 35 from 30 balls, including five fours.

Virender Sehwag led India’s riposte with a feisty unbeaten fifty as the hosts refused to be buried under South Africa’s run mountain and promised a runfeast in the first cricket Test here on Thursday.

After the visitors capitalised on the M A Chidambaram Stadium’s lifeless track and India’s listless attack to amass 540, Sehwag (52) and Jaffer (25) responded well to take India to 82 for no loss at stumps on the second day.

Sehwag’s unbeaten 52 came off 61 balls and included six boundaries and a six.

Even though the hosts got off to a good start, they still trail by 458 runs and just cannot afford to get carried away, especially when they need another 259 runs to escape the ignominy of a follow-on.

One-day and Twenty20 formats have been threatening to dislodge Test cricket from the pedestal in the subcontinent for some time now. If the wicket at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium is any indication, henceforth it wouldn’t be tough to keep the public away from the longer version.

On a pitch that was enough to put the crowd to sleep and the batsmen to as much as they are willing to go for, South Africa reached 540 before the Indians showed they were equally adept at the task, reaching 82 without loss in 99 minutes.

If Indian cricket had taken a few strides after the tour Down Under, the over-reliance on such flat tracks at home will only serve to offset that advantage. The call for true sporting pitches with bounce and carry has again fallen on deaf ears.

Hashim Amla hit a century as South Africa enjoyed the better of the morning session on the second day of the first Test against India to reach lunch 404 for five.

Amla was unbeaten on 124 while Mark Boucher was 26 not out as poor bowling let down the tourists in Chennai.

South Africa had started the day in a strong position on 304 for four and lost just one wicket before lunch as AB de Villiers was dismissed six runs short of his half century with an hour of the morning gone.

Amla had started the second day on 85 while de Villiers resumed on 10 not out and in the second over of the day the latter had picked up two quick fours.

Hashim Amla’s dismissal was pretty symptomatic. As the Indian fielders and bowlers wilted in the heat and against the assault, only a run-out would have provided any joy to them, and the South Africans obliged.

However, that was the only bright spot for the home side, as the visitors went about their systematic decimation of the Indian bowling, going in to tea at 501-6, Amla scoring 159 of them. At the break, Mark Boucher (62 not out) and Morne Morkel (25 not out) were adding to the pressure.

Amla’s century was the first against India, and the fourth of his career, and while he and Mark Boucher were batting, there was absolutely no scope for the Indian bowlers to make a breakthrough. But the Proteas handed them a wicket when Boucher pushed Anil Kumble to the covers, called for a single, and then sent Amla back.

South Africa have won the first day, having scored 304 for 4 after winning the toss. The platform was set by Smith and McKenzie who scored 73 and 94 respectively and South Africa did not lose wickets in succession, adding partnerships of 132, 64, 47 and 47.

The pitch had nothing for the new ball bowlers but RP Singh and Sreesanth were guilty of giving away too many boundary balls which allowed South Africa to build momentum with ease. All four wickets fell to the spinners - Kumble and Harbhajan - but the pitch has been extremely good for batting. India’s fielding was sluggish and there were several appalling half-hearted attempts, a stark climb-down from the energy on the field during the CB Series in Australia.

Amla has looked in complete control during his unbeaten 85 and South Africa will hope for a big hundred from him on Thursday. de Villiers is at the crease with him and there’s Boucher to come.
