Controversy kicks up before India-Lanka series

They talk about “confusion” as if it is a form of dyslexia and that becomes the dysfunctional norm in this part of the world.

Rumours on how former Sri Lanka Test captain Hashan Tillekeratne had been appointed then ‘fired’ as manager left most foreign and Indian journalists bemused although he said he was still the manager.

Then there is the suggestion that Chris Broad’s appointment as match referee for the limited overs series following the Idea Cup Test Series was ‘controversial’ and likely to result in an official objection from Sri Lanka Cricket. This has been shot down by the International Cricket Council.

It seems that those “objecting” to Broad have short memories. While it is known the players don’t have a problem with the former English opening batsman, it seams there is a smear campaign before the limited overs series starts in Dambulla next month.

India vs South Africa 1st Test - S Africa batsmen make India toil

South Africa’s batsmen gave their side a strong foothold in the first Test against India in Chennai.

The visitors chose to bat after winning the toss and reached 132 before Graeme Smith (73) was caught off Anil Kumble.

Fellow opener Neil McKenzie fell six short of his century but that only brought in Hashim Amla and the visitors continued to make the hosts toil.

Amla lost partners Jacques Kallis and Ashwell Prince on his way to a superb 85 in a total of 304-4 by the close.

Kumble predicts close contest with SA

Test captain Anil Kumble thinks the forthcoming three-match series against the visiting South Africans would be a challenging one as the Proteas are a tough unit to beat.

“When they came to India last time for the two-Test series, it was tough to beat them. After drawing the Kanpur Test, we won at Kolkata through Harbhajan Singh’s excellent performance (7/87) with the ball,” he told a press conference after arriving here for the first Test starting on March 26.

However, he said the team with the home advantage and experience could win the series.

“It is going to be a tough challenge this time around. They have great players in their rank. This time of the year is going to be hot. We have the experience and also quality. I am sure, we will be able to win the series,” he said.
