Prince falls but de Villiers swells South Africa’s lead

Lunch South Africa 384 for 5 (de Villiers 103*, Boucher 8*) lead England 203 by 181 runs

England removed Ashwell Prince for 149 in a far-improved bowling display, but were left frustrated as South Africa rode their luck to survive several near-misses on the third day at Headingley. AB de Villiers was one such recipient of lady luck, but took advantage of the inevitable loose deliveries to notch his sixth Test hundred, helping to swell South Africa’s lead beyond 150.

Following their jaded effort yesterday, on a surface offering scant assistance to seam or spin, England welcomed a slight change in conditions this morning and could well have removed Prince and de Villiers within the first hour. Inevitably, it was to Andrew Flintoff that Michael Vaughan turned for inspiration, and in a lively three-over spell he found encouraging movement off the pitch, beating de Villiers with a neat leg-cutter and even luring the normally sober Prince into a washy drive outside off.

Advantage South Africa as Kallis, de Villiers build lead

Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers struck unbeaten half-centuries to take the visitors to 223-4 at stumps. South Africa have already managed a 147-run lead. Dale Steyn took a fiver to destroy India in the first session.

There could have been only one reason behind captain Anil Kumble’s decision to bat first on a lively surface at the Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera here – that he could buy some more time to heal his own injury and be able to bowl. What he didn’t consider though, was that his batsmen needed time too.
