S.Africa win toss and field against England in cricket Test

-->

South Africa captain Graeme Smith won the toss and elected to field in the second Test against England at Headingley here Friday.England gave a shock debut to Nottinghamshire pace bowler Darren Pattinson in one of two changes to the team that drew the first of this four-Test series at Lord’s.

Former roof tiler Pattinson, who has appeared in just 11 first-class matches, wasn’t in the original squad for this match and nor was he even the first reserve.

But, having been called up as cover for James Anderson on Thursday, the 29-year-old swing bowler was included in the team.

Anderson was passed fit but left-arm quick Ryan Sidebottom, a county colleague of Pattinson’s, was ruled out with the back strain he sustained at Lord’s.

SL Test Series: India need to get into Test groove

Posted on by admin
-->

After being busy in one-dayers and Twenty20s for almost three months, India will look to quickly get into the groove for the longer version of cricket as they take on Sri Lankan Board XI in a three-day warm-up match in Colombo from Friday. India, who last played a Test against South Africa at home in April, took advantage of a sunny day here and got into some rigorous practice to shift into the five-day mode ahead of the first match, beginning on June 23.

The match will be India’s only warm-up game before the three-Test series against the host beginning July 23.

India is likely to field their senior players for the match as many of them have not played for a while as they were not part of the recent Asia cup in Pakistan.

Controversy kicks up before India-Lanka series

Posted on by admin
-->

They talk about “confusion” as if it is a form of dyslexia and that becomes the dysfunctional norm in this part of the world.

Rumours on how former Sri Lanka Test captain Hashan Tillekeratne had been appointed then ‘fired’ as manager left most foreign and Indian journalists bemused although he said he was still the manager.

Then there is the suggestion that Chris Broad’s appointment as match referee for the limited overs series following the Idea Cup Test Series was ‘controversial’ and likely to result in an official objection from Sri Lanka Cricket. This has been shot down by the International Cricket Council.

It seems that those “objecting” to Broad have short memories. While it is known the players don’t have a problem with the former English opening batsman, it seams there is a smear campaign before the limited overs series starts in Dambulla next month.

Flintoff returns to boost England vs South Africa

Match facts

Friday July 18 - Tuesday July 22, 2008
Start time 11.00am (10.00GMT)

Big Picture

One weary set of England players and one rejuvenated set of South Africans have made their way north after five days of hard toil at Lord’s. Even though a featherbed surface aided the visitors’ escape, it was a magnificent effort to lose just three wickets in 167 overs of their second innings. Michael Vaughan was aware of the dangers of back-to-back Tests when he enforced the follow-on and, with a couple of his attack showing the strain by the end at Lord’s, their endurance and stamina will be tested to the full - especially if they have to field first. With that in mind it is a major boost to have a fresh pair of legs in the squad, and they aren’t just anyone’s legs. Eighteen months after his last Test appearance for England, Andrew Flintoff will make his comeback. His previous outing in any international was last September during the ICC World Twenty20.

Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka captain, has predicted a close contest in the three-Test series against India, while his counterpart Anil Kumble emphasised his team’s consistency in the run-up to the tour, during a press conference in Colombo to launch the series.

“Every time we’ve played them, there has been some really good cricket played by both teams, who possess some good-quality players,” Jayawardene said. “I am sure that the public will have a great series to watch.”

“We thoroughly enjoy playing India, at home or away,” he said “It’s always been a tough challenge. There is good rivalry with our neighbours.”

The greatest show on earth? IPL walks tightrope as circus begins

Posted on by admin
-->

There has never been anything like the Indian Premier League in cricket. Which is why nobody – not the fearful administrators of the global game, not the opportunistic founders, not the multimillionaire team owners, not the players rewarded to unprecedented levels, not the hard-nosed television rights holders – knows how it will turn out.

They suspect, they hope, they yearn that it will be an unparalleled worldwide triumph, the next sporting big thing. In their more fantastical moments they will have imagined an event that captures the imagination and TV time of the entire subcontinent and by extension the whole cricketing planet beyond.

But they cannot be certain. The IPL is a huge gamble. It seems to have the necessary ingredients – the players, the money, the novelty – but until the first game is played, and perhaps until the first week is done, the element of doubt remains.

IPL wants partnership with English premier league

Posted on by admin

Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi says he wants to enter into a partnership with an English premier league in order to enable star England players to compete in the Indian championship.

“Our players are contracted only to the IPL, but as long as an English premier league was not played at the same time as ours, then I see no problem with partnership. I think it’s a good idea,” he said in an interview on Sunday.

His comments came amid reports that the three men running cricket in England will be visiting India at the start of the IPL championship next week.

IPL is history in the making

Adam Gilchrist said that the Indian Premier League was not meant to just create money.“If all the development programmes are put in place, it could usher in a new chapter. I sincerely believe that the IPL is history in the making,” Gilchrist said during a media interaction on his arrival in the city to play for the Deccan Chargers in the IPL.

About his IPL goals, the former Aussie stumper said that the objective of everyone would be to win the title. “I look at the IPL this way: take the first two matches and then think of the semifinal and later the final,” he said.

About captaincy, Gilchrist said he never aspired for the post. “I never felt that I must be the captain. I think Ricky did a fantastic job as captain. Well, VVS (Laxman) is the natural choice for our IPL team,” he said.

With 100 Hours To Go, IPL Debut A Trial By Fire?

Millions have already been spent. More will be spent in the next few days. But who gets to show the matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the world’s most lucrative cricket event, or who gets to see them is still not clear.

The stand-off, with the IPL management on one side and media — both print and electronic — on the other, has not been resolved yet, though the IPL top brass says that all outstanding issues relating to the media have been sorted out.

The National Broadcasters Association (NBA), a group of broadcasters, is said to be holding meetings on how to deal with this issue and the dreaded word ‘boycott’ has figured often enough.
