India’s One-day opening batsman Virender Sehwag will realise the importance of placing a bigger price tag on his Test wicket.
India, on 79-3 with Sehwag’s early departure and fellow opener Gautam Gambhir immediately after tea, had a shaky start in their pursuit of challenging Sri Lanka’s massive first innings total of 600-6 declared at tea on day three of the first Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

Sri Lanka, piloted by Malinda Warnapura’s century, took command in an extended session blessed with clear weather to strengthen their position to 205 for 2 at lunch. Warnapura was supported by his captain Mahela Jayawardene, who compiled a classy half-century to grind the opposition on a slow pitch and the Indians compounded their woes with a couple of missed opportunities.
Sri Lanka added 120 runs without losing a wicket and the batsmen never looked in trouble. A front-foot no-ball by Zaheer Khan in the sixth over of the day denied India a breakthrough as Warnapura spooned a sharp return catch. Jayawardene was as fortuitous later on, when Dinesh Karthik failed to hold on to a thin bottom edge off an Anil Kumble slider.

Senior England players have threatened to revolt against their Board and boycott the Champions Trophy, forging a common front with their Australian counterparts in expressing apprehensions over the security situation in Pakistan.
The International Cricket Council may be satisfied with the security situation in Pakistan “as of now” but English media reports said senior England players are unwilling to go by the governing body’s assertions.
‘Daily Telegraph’ claimed that “messages have been bouncing back and forward between English and Australian players” in West Indies, for a concerted action on the issue.

Cricket is about to take a leap of faith in technology with the trial of a system that allows players to challenge the decision of the on-field umpires in the Test series between Sri Lanka and India. The umpire’s word will no longer be final.
The system has been tried, somewhat unsuccessfully, and in the relatively obscure environment of county cricket. But,after a shelved proposal to use it in the current England-South Africa series, millions of television viewers now await the sight of the first-ever referral to be made in an international contest. The jury is out on whether the move is designed to undermine the umpires or to assist them, but the acceptance of the system will depend by the decisions it produces.
