Yuvraj gets his mother to defend him

Yuvraj Singh’s mother Shabnam today lashed out at Kapil Dev for criticising her son’s party animal image, saying the former India captain is no angel himself.

I was indeed pained to read Kapil Dev’s highly provocative comment on Yuvi’s party life. As a mother, I am hurt mainly because Kapil has known Yuvi ever since he was born,” an enraged Shabnam said in a statement.

“He has obviously gone by the media reporting which was proved wrong,” she added, referring to the late night party that Yuvraj allegedly attended during the Asia Cup.

Champions Trophy hosts to be confirmed on Sunday

Pakistan face an agonising wait till Sunday to know if they will host the International Cricket Council’s Champions Trophy in September amid security concerns in that country.

The ICC said representatives of all eight participating teams in the year’s biggest One-day tournament will receive a security briefing at the governing body’s headquarters in Dubai over the weekend.

“The timing of the briefing was agreed upon during the ICC’s annual conference in early July to allow the ICC’s security consultants to provide a comprehensive report,” it said in a statement.

“Prior to the meeting, the ICC will not indulge in speculation and, at this stage, the tournament will proceed in Pakistan, as scheduled.”

Officials from the ICC’s broadcast partners, ESPN-STAR Sports, and the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) have also been invited to attend, the ICC said.

Tired of being overlooked by the selectors, Pakistani leg-spinner Danish Kaneria is toying with the idea of switching side and playing for England. The 27-year-old leg-spinner said he has enough cricket in him and he would not hesitate to switch sides if Pakistan continues to ignore him. “I may consider playing for England at one stage if Pakistan are not picking me,” Kaneria told Colchester Gazette.

“I am 27 and a proper leg-spinner gets his real class when he is 32 — Shane Warne got to his 30s and was bowling out every team, so I have plenty of years to go,” said the spinner who plays for Essex in county cricket.
