Sri Lanka vs West Indies Live - Vaas leads Sri Lanka to victory

First Test, Guyana, day five (close):
Sri Lanka 476-8d & 240-7d bt West Indies 280 & 315 by 121 runs

Vaas took 5-61, including the last two wickets with the new ball, as the hosts were all out for 315 just 15 minutes from the scheduled close of play.

Opener Dwayne Bravo hit 83 to take West Indies to 170-2 at lunch and give them hope of avoiding defeat.

But Sri Lanka hit back and, despite 51 not out from Chris Gayle, took the win.

West Indies seemed intent on holding out for a draw as they resumed on 96-1, needing 437 for the victory.

West Indies v Sri Lanka, 1st Test, Guyana, 4th day

Sri Lanka 476/8d & 240/7d
West Indies 280 & 96/1 (23.0 ov)
West Indies require another 341 runs with 9 wickets remaining
West Indies RR 4.17
Last 10 ovs 32/0 RR 3.20
Stumps - Day 4

RR Sarwan 34* (55b 2×4) M Muralitharan 6-1-18-0
DJ Bravo 46* (70b 6×4 1×6) HMRKB Herath 7-1-19-0

That ends a very positive reply by the West Indies in response to 437. The most impressive aspect of the chase was the confidence with which they negotiated Murali and Vaas. Dwayne Bravo adjusted really well as an opener, though we still don’t know for sure why Gayle held himself back. The pair did justice to the pitch with this start so tomorrow should be interesting. That doesn’t mean that Sri Lanka should panic. They’re still well in front and a draw or a Sri Lankan win seem more realistic even at this stage. 341 to get, nine wickets needed.

India vs South Africa - Live Scores - Chennai Test - Day 1

South Africa 304/4 (90.0 ov)

South Africa RR 3.37
Last 10 ovs 16/1 RR 1.60

South Africa have won the first day, having scored 304 for 4 after winning the toss. The platform was set by Smith and McKenzie who scored 73 and 94 respectively and South Africa did not lose wickets in succession, adding partnerships of 132, 64, 47 and 47.

The pitch had nothing for the new ball bowlers but RP Singh and Sreesanth were guilty of giving away too many boundary balls which allowed South Africa to build momentum with ease. All four wickets fell to the spinners - Kumble and Harbhajan - but the pitch has been extremely good for batting. India’s fielding was sluggish and there were several appalling half-hearted attempts, a stark climb-down from the energy on the field during the CB Series in Australia.

Amla has looked in complete control during his unbeaten 85 and South Africa will hope for a big hundred from him on Thursday. de Villiers is at the crease with him and there’s Boucher to come.

Big picture

Quotas and colour, senior and junior - they are the controversies that have been part of South Africa’s and India’s build-up to the first Test in Chennai. South Africa’s controversial quota-based selection policy exploded during their win in Bangladesh with Andre Nel reacting strongly to his exclusion from the tour of India, while Charl Langeveldt later opted out because he did not want the tag of a quota player. India’s historic CB Series victory in Australia reignited the senior-junior debate that has been a rage ever since Mahendra Singh Dhoni led a young squad to Twenty20 glory in South Africa.

West Indies Tail Saves The Follow On In Guyana

Sri Lanka 476-8 declared (M Jayawardene 136, Warnapura 120) & 83-1 v
West Indies 280 (Sarwan 80, Vaas 3-48, Thushara 3-59)

The West Indies bowlers did their bit with the bat as their side avoided having to follow on on day four of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Georgetown, Guyana as they were bowled out for 280 in reply to 476 for seven declared.

Sri Lankan openers Michael Vandort and Malinda Warnapura made a confident start before Vandort was caught down the leg side by Denesh Ramdin off of the bowling of Chris Gayle for 24, with Sri Lanka on 43 for one in their second innings.

They reached lunch on 83 for one, 274 runs ahead and looking in complete control and under little threat from the West Indian bowlers.

Kumble predicts close contest with SA

Test captain Anil Kumble thinks the forthcoming three-match series against the visiting South Africans would be a challenging one as the Proteas are a tough unit to beat.

“When they came to India last time for the two-Test series, it was tough to beat them. After drawing the Kanpur Test, we won at Kolkata through Harbhajan Singh’s excellent performance (7/87) with the ball,” he told a press conference after arriving here for the first Test starting on March 26.

However, he said the team with the home advantage and experience could win the series.

“It is going to be a tough challenge this time around. They have great players in their rank. This time of the year is going to be hot. We have the experience and also quality. I am sure, we will be able to win the series,” he said.

Sidebottom puts England on top

An inspired spell of precision bowling by Ryan Sidebottom pulled England off the ropes and put them in charge of the third cricket Test against New Zealand as 15 wickets fell here on Sunday.

After a day of fluctuating fortunes, England reached stumps on the second day of the series decider at 91 for two, holding an overall lead of 176.

As batsmen contrived to make the placid McLean Park wicket look dangerous, England’s first innings folded for a seemingly inconsequential 258.

New Zealand raced to 103 for one in reply before Sidebottom grabbed the initiative and New Zealand’s last nine wickets tumbled for 65 runs with the left-arm quick claiming a career-best seven for 47.

Sri Lanka leave out Muralitharan

Sri Lanka have left veterans Muttiah Muralitharan and Sanath Jayasuriya out of their one-day squad to tour West Indies next month. The 38-year-old Jayasuriya and spinner Muralitharan, 35, have been left out as Sri Lanka build for the 2011 World Cup.

Ajantha Mendis replaces Muralitharan, who will play the two Tests that precede the one-dayers, while Mahela Udawatta takes Jayasuriya’s place.

Fast bowler Lasith Malinga will miss the series with a foot injury.
