India vs SL Board President’s XI, Day III - Questions face India Test readiness

Watching television images of South Africa drilling England the past week is a dangerous exercise. India, for example, are nowhere near the level of the Proteas who drew the first Test at Lord’s with character and quality and have outplayed Michael Vaughan’s team with style and panache at Leeds.

Fighting centuries and determined concentration explains why the Proteas are second on the Test rankings. There is also quality support in their bowling now. They have found their radar again and sorted out their length and pace.

The Indian team for the first Test of the Idea Cup series are still several rungs below in terms of form and match-fitness, which means that Gary Kirsten and Co. still have a lot of work to do. While the former South African opening batsman may have been happy four days ago at the preparation for the Sri Lanka Test series, he will be wondering whether a second practice match might have been an advisable option.

The ICC board will now take a final decision over the next 72 hours after its members discuss the issue over the phone, the official said. The ICC board, while taking a final decision, will also consider a report on Sunday’s security briefing.

Prince falls but de Villiers swells South Africa’s lead

Lunch South Africa 384 for 5 (de Villiers 103*, Boucher 8*) lead England 203 by 181 runs

England removed Ashwell Prince for 149 in a far-improved bowling display, but were left frustrated as South Africa rode their luck to survive several near-misses on the third day at Headingley. AB de Villiers was one such recipient of lady luck, but took advantage of the inevitable loose deliveries to notch his sixth Test hundred, helping to swell South Africa’s lead beyond 150.

Following their jaded effort yesterday, on a surface offering scant assistance to seam or spin, England welcomed a slight change in conditions this morning and could well have removed Prince and de Villiers within the first hour. Inevitably, it was to Andrew Flintoff that Michael Vaughan turned for inspiration, and in a lively three-over spell he found encouraging movement off the pitch, beating de Villiers with a neat leg-cutter and even luring the normally sober Prince into a washy drive outside off.

Kirsten happy with India’s preparation -

India’s coach Gary Kirsten has said that with so much cricket taking place in different formats, it is vital that every player understands the role that he is expected to play in the upcoming Tests against Sri Lanka.

Speaking to the media at the end of the drawn three-day game against a Sri Lanka Board XI, Kirsten said: “We have to create an environment for everyone. To perform at his optimum, he needs a complete understanding of what he needs to do. We have worked hard on it so that everyone understands their roles and how they are going to play Test cricket.”

Champions Trophy hosts to be confirmed on Sunday

Pakistan face an agonising wait till Sunday to know if they will host the International Cricket Council’s Champions Trophy in September amid security concerns in that country.

The ICC said representatives of all eight participating teams in the year’s biggest One-day tournament will receive a security briefing at the governing body’s headquarters in Dubai over the weekend.

“The timing of the briefing was agreed upon during the ICC’s annual conference in early July to allow the ICC’s security consultants to provide a comprehensive report,” it said in a statement.

“Prior to the meeting, the ICC will not indulge in speculation and, at this stage, the tournament will proceed in Pakistan, as scheduled.”

Officials from the ICC’s broadcast partners, ESPN-STAR Sports, and the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) have also been invited to attend, the ICC said.

Pick me or I will play for England, threatens Danish

Tired of being overlooked by the selectors, Pakistani leg-spinner Danish Kaneria is toying with the idea of switching side and playing for England. The 27-year-old leg-spinner said he has enough cricket in him and he would not hesitate to switch sides if Pakistan continues to ignore him. “I may consider playing for England at one stage if Pakistan are not picking me,” Kaneria told Colchester Gazette.

“I am 27 and a proper leg-spinner gets his real class when he is 32 — Shane Warne got to his 30s and was bowling out every team, so I have plenty of years to go,” said the spinner who plays for Essex in county cricket.

5 Differences Between Cricket and Baseball

1. Cricketers run in straight lines, not in circles

2. No baseball fielder would be stupid enough to stand at silly mid off

3. Baseball games will never stop for afternoon tea

4. Cricketers pants aren’t skin tight

5. Cricketers sometimes will wear baseball caps, but baseball players never wear cricket caps
